The Major Oak

Description: I couldn't visit Nottinghamshire without visiting Sherwood Forest, and I couldn't visit Sherwood Forest without visiting the Major Oak - so here it is. It's estimated to be between 800-1000 years old and, according to legend, was the hiding place for Robin Hood.

That is one awesome tree, and places like that have to be done, lol ( even if you only do them once , they stay with you a lifetime)

I would have dodged all those pole looking things and climbed into that tree! What are those poles there for anyways?

Hey Chica - the poles are there to help stop the tree collapsing under its own weight. If you were nearly a thousand years old, you'd probably need a bit of support too!
I have seen a photo where all the poles and cables have been Photoshopped out, and I did consider doing that here, but some sort of supports have been in place for the last 100 years so I think they're becoming an integral part of the tree.

Oh I couldn't agree with you more, the poles need to stay, I think they add that much more to the photo, before I clicked on the thumbnail I was under the assumption it was a part of the tree!
