It's very difficult to say which I like better - the landscape or portrait format. However, I think - after careful consideration - that this one has a slight edge. They're both great photos, though.

I wouldn't say that landscape format always works better, but - for me - it does here. I think that's because this photo says "wide open spaces" and that's the picture I always get in my head when I think of America. I know there are plenty of parts of the US that are crowded and cramped, but when I think of the landscape of America I see Andrew Wyeth's paintings and hear Dvořák's "New World" symphony.

I like having that space around my subjects in most landscapes... I actually have a couple close cropped shots of this barn that really aren't bad but... not as interesting I think. Perhaps if the sky in the vertical took on more structured and detailed look in the clouds and more dramatic... it could have made vertical more interesting.
